The Evolution of the Screen: Are TV Ads Actually Personalized?
Remember when watching television meant sitting on the couch and enduring the exact same commercial breaks as your neighbor? Whether you were a college student living on instant ramen or a retiree watching the evening news, the shampoo, fast-food, and detergent commercials rolling across the screen were identical.
Today, that collective viewing experience has fundamentally shifted. If you have ever felt like a commercial break was speaking directly to your recent online searches, your location, or your household’s unique shopping habits, you aren’t imagining things. Television advertising has crossed into the digital age, bringing personalization, data, and precision to the biggest screen in your house.
How TV Ads Became Personalized
The transformation of television from a broad, one-size-fits-all medium into a targeted powerhouse is driven by two main technological pillars: Connected TV (CTV) and Addressable TV.
1. Connected TV (CTV) and Streaming
When you watch your favorite shows via streaming apps on a smart TV, Apple TV, Roku, or Fire Stick, you are participating in CTV. Unlike traditional broadcast or cable, streaming relies on internet protocol (IP) delivery.
Because the content is delivered digitally, streaming platforms and publishers can leverage real-time data. When an ad break approaches, an automated auction happens in milliseconds. Advertisers can bid to show their ad specifically to households matching certain profiles—such as pet owners, frequent travelers, or auto-enthusiasts—rather than just buying ad space during a specific show.
2. Addressable TV (Cable, Satellite, and IP)
You don’t even need to be a cord-cutter to experience personalization. Addressable TV technology allows traditional cable, satellite, and telecom providers to swap out commercials at the household level.
